At Japan Travelogue, we specialize in expert guided tours and walking holidays in Japan for small groups (max 8 to 10 people) of discerning travellers from around the world, keen to explore Japan at a slower pace walking beyond the guidebooks. We use local buses and trains — including the Shinkansen bullet train — and walk the back roads for an unforgettable experience of this still relatively unexplored country.

We want our travellers to wander through Japan without feeling like a tourist — experiencing the renowned courtesy and hospitality of the Japanese people and gaining an insight into their everyday life, as well as appreciating the cultural, historical and culinary highlights of this fascinating country. We stay at a variety of traditional Japanese and modern Western-style accommodations. At Japanese inns, some of which have been run by the same family for several generations, travellers can enjoy delicious meals prepared with local produce and sleep on futons in traditional tatami mat rooms. There is a Japanese bath to soak in after the day's walk.

Everyone at Japan Travelogue has both lived and travelled extensively in Japan. Our tour leaders come from a variety of backgrounds, but all have one thing in common — a deep passion for the country and its people gained from years of living, studying and working there. To outsiders, Japan can often seem a complex and puzzling place, but our tour leaders will be with you throughout your trip, explaining local customs, etiquette and wonderful food, allowing you to gain the most from your experiences and the interesting local people you meet along the way. Their enthusiasm, expansive knowledge and skill mean you can be assured of the best possible holiday in this fascinating country.

We can also create custom tours to suit your specific interests. Maybe you would like to spend an afternoon learning how to make sushi under the guidance of a highly-skilled professional chef, or climb Mount Fuji as part of your walking holiday. Accommodation levels on custom tours — from moderate to luxury — can be adjusted to meet your requirements.

Whether you are joining one of our scheduled tours or want us to create a custom tour for you, our aim is to show you the real Japan and its people.
